Visitors to Western Illinois University may have believed themselves lost in New Orleans had they been visiting the Spencer Recreation Center on Feb. 28. Campus Recreation’s annual Midnight Mardi Gras was in full swing Friday night.
131 participants came out to partake in the faux Fat Tuesday fun. Some events, like mask decorating and mocktail (nonalcoholic cocktail) making, incorporated cultural aspects of the famous festival. Other activities, including the ever-popular battleship, were also included.
“The participants were excited about the various activities we hosted,” event coordinator Sara Frederick said. “We had prizes to give out for each event we had.”
Approximately ten prizes were given out to event winners. These participants won gift certificates to Jimmy John’s and the University Union bookstore.
“We had a lot of participation from underclassmen,” Frederick said. “But we had a lot of participation from the far side of campus [upperclassmen] too.”
Those who missed out The next rec event on the schedule will be Mom’s Weekend on March 28 and 29. This event will include “Massages for Mom and Me” and the “Big Pink Volleyball Challenge.”
